This is a Burmese 1920-1940 painted and etched red Lacquer ware Bathroom Soap dish - 100 gram 12 cm ( 4.75 in ) long, 12 cm ( 3.5 in ) wide and 6.0 cm (2.3 in) tall 2-piece box. It has a beautiful finish, is in perfect condition with no chips, being kept well over the years and rare to find. It comes from a find of some lacquer ware pieces on a trip to Northern Burma 20 years ago. The design, a string of delicate and beautiful flowers are both etched and painted in the design and on the top and the sides of the box. The box is waterproof and paint will not come off with use. I use one of these myself in my own home.
The flower string is a sign of wealth and beauty of the Burmese and often a household item motif, along with the Chinthe or Temple Lion and Hantha, more often with the serving sets of elite or royal families.
This is a very rare type of lacquer ware.
