This is a gorgeous, finely crafted Carnelian shell cameo from the Edwardian era. The likeness is very typical of that period and depicts the goddess Flora. The carving is crisp and well detailed all over. The clever carver used the different layers of the shell to create some added interest. There is a gentle blush to her cheek and some colour to the flowers, hair and tunic. The Carnelian shell is strong, without any major flaws and has pretty varying hues. The carving is still very crisp and belies the more than 100 years of this cameo, which dates back from around 1900. There are some minor surface scratches in some places which do not detract from the cameos' beauty.
The cameo is encased in a very pretty and well-crafted, handmade 10kt yellow gold filigree frame. It has stylized leaves at the four compass points. This piece may be worn as a brooch or pendant. It fastens by means of an early safety clasp and hinged pin, and there is a retracting bale for wear as a pendant. The piece also has a safety pin and chain attached. There is a hallmark on the clasp stating 10kt for the gold content. The condition of this lovely antique cameo is very well, considering the age, with the usual wear that one would expect. There are some small, minor dings to the frame, and some scuffing and tiny scratches to the shell, all hardly visible to the naked eye. In all it looks and feels quite pristine. This is a good sized came and measures circa 5cm x 4cm. It weighs around 14 grams. This delightful cameo is both collectable and wearable.
